Giving vs. Draining Energy

Everything we do gives or takes away energy. As we head into a season of hibernation, it’s essential to understand yourself and what you need, in order to take (or not take) the action needed for you.

I started learning about energy after a near-death experience led to PTSD, depression, and being unable to work. Every book I read on how to get a career you love, told me to explore what activities brought energy vs drained it. The happiest people did more of what they loved and what brought them energy, whereas the people who felt stuck in their lives did what they “had” to do and always felt exhausted.

At first, I was stumped on how I could work and have energy, as I had learned that “work” always sucked energy, but the more I did, and the more I discovered, I found that I felt more tired and drained when I wasn’t doing the things that brought me joy, alongside the things I “had” to do.

On your path to self-discovery, not much will make logical sense. This is a good thing, because most of us have been led only by logic on our path. This new way of doing and being involves tapping into our intuition and being led by our desires.

If you’re feeling meh, I invite you to track your energy. What gives you life and what takes away?

If everything takes away energy, especially your work, get curious into what specifically is draining, and then start exploring options to shift. If nothing brings you energy, think back to when you were a kid. What did you love to do? As an adult, what do you know would add some joy and energy to your life? While you might not logically understand how going for a walk, or spending time dancing might amp up your career and personal life, trust that the increase in your vibe and energy will have an impact and will lead to greater things.

When I was coming to understand myself and what brought me energy, I wrote things off like walking, doing yoga, meditating, and reflecting, because how the heck could I (logically) make a career out of it? Instead of trying to fix your life with thought, tune into the way you feel and simply do more of what makes you feel good, trusting that you want to do these things for a reason.
